Bob… A Make Your Own Product Story….
With Some People, Their Own Product is More in Their Mindset and Thus the Right Choice
I found it interesting when my neighbor showed up yesterday afternoon… He hardly ever comes over and when he does, it’s for a reason…
Let’s backtrack on this story…
A couple of times ago when Bob (not his real name), came over, he was depressed… I could see it in his face as he knocked on my door and came into my little mountain cabin (Yeah, I live in this homebuilt log cabin in the Colorado foothills)…
Bob is one of those people that is having a hard time during this recession (There’s a lot of us citizens that can relate to that)… He’s self-employed, running an electrician company… A Master Electrician by profession. Times are tough and money getting scarce… Clients are scare too…
Bob’s wife is carrying him at the moment… She’s not crazy about that… And that’s not like him either… and he doesn’t like it… So, he thought he would come to me because he knew that I knew something about being online…
Need I say more?
Bob knew that I have an online business that helps me supplement my offline income…
Asking me about where to get started, I told him about affiliate marketing. I even gave him an old eBook on the subject to teach him what to do…
I went through the whole spiel about what affiliate marketing is and how you find affiliate programs and set everything up… Find domain names and register them… Get ready to start selling…
I pointed him to some free WISYWIG editors and told him about WordPress and How to set that up and how to use Windows LiveWriter to post to his blog… Everything…
He should have been set to go… and off he went…
Next Time I Saw Bob
Nothing had happened… I think it’s that way with most newbie marketers. Yeah, he told me that “I looked at all you gave me and I thought about what you said and, “That’s a lot of work”…
It’s not the get rich quick scam that everyone is looking for… You have to put the time in to be an affiliate marketer… So, I thought of a different approach to Bob…
Have You Thought of Making Your Own Product?
I asked him about what he knew about what people needed to know about doing their own electrical work around their houses… especially if they were cash strapped…
He went on and on…
Some people need to create their own product. Selling affiliate products to others is “selling”. But, selling their own product is something else… A different mindset.
I told Bob what I thought about this and maybe him writing an eBook about electrical problems that the homeowner might want to overcome… He told me, “I can’t do that, I can’t write, especially a book”
We went on to discuss the choice of writing some short reports that he could market… I told him about Paul Myers’ eBook on Build Your Own Empire… 20 Pages at a Time and how short reports might be the way to go…
Plus, I told him about the bonus of the eBook/report templates that Paul supplies… Ones that he could just type his reports/eBook into with ease… saving him time.
That Brings Us to the Present
Remember, Bob is knocking on my door and I’m letting him in… The big surprise is that Bob has three reports that he’s made on different electrical problems that the homeowner might be faced with….

So, now, Bob is looking for marketing advice again… But now he has his own product and that fits more into his mindset for what you should be selling online…

Sometimes it just means finding out what fits with you… What you feel comfortable with, and having the guidance that you might get through a good eBook or neighborly advice…
