Please, Don’t Marry Your Website
I have a problem with some webmasters that seem to be wed to their website design. You might know the type of website. Those that have the flashy sites with all the bells and whistles, drop-down java navigational bars and such. The sites that are search engine unfriendly and the webmaster has no clue why it isn’t indexed or ranking well.
I have to tell you that I’ve about had it with one of my clients. He came to me because he had re-designed a website for his company that originally had a PageRank 4 (another web designer had made the original site) and it had dropped to a PR 0 after the re-design. He just couldn’t figure out what was wrong. His boss loved the new site, visitors to the site were pleased, but it dropped in Google’s index and the amount of traffic Google was sending was down to a quarter of what it had been.
I took a look at the site and its source code. Immediately I saw what the problem was. Although the navigation menu looked nice with its mouse-over color change and all, it was actually and image made in Fireworks. The search engines were hitting a dead end on his homepage and couldn’t navigate to the back pages.
He had changed the content of the homepage and failed to include any of the keywords that the original site ranked high for. Plus all the javascript in the header and at the begining of the body of the page made it so very little content was being indexed.
He hired me to optimize the site and its pages, trying to keep his design as intact as possible. I told him that somethings would have to go if he was to expect to gain the rankings back.
