What to do if the ClickBank Vendor’s Sales Page Stinks
If you have a good ClickBank product to promote, that has good traffic to it, is in demand in your niche, and you have determined that it has a market that is willing to pay for it, but you’ve been to the sales page and it stinks… Just what can you do about marketing this product?
You actually have an opportunity staring you in the eyes… All you need to do is increase the sales page’s conversion rate. There are a couple of ways of doing this:
- Write an outstanding pre-sell page or review and tell the visitor to ignore the sales page because it stinks and go straight for the order button
- Write your own killer sales page and bypass the vendor
When I first started with ClickBank affiliate marketing, I used the former of these two bypass methods. It was the easier of the two. Just pre-sell well, write a good review and tell the visitor to go straight for the order button…
Write Your Own Custom Sales Page to Replace the Vendor’s Page
Nowadays, I prefer option two… If you read my last post on evaluating ClickBank products for profitability, you should now know that if you have a gravity score on your ClickBank product and it is increasing, your referred sales percentage is constant or decreasing, and the popularity is decreasing amongst the affiliates, this product is ripe for you to market.
Why? The product is in demand and affiliates have stopped promoting it. Those affiliates that are still in the game are getting better at it. Thus, you must assume that fewer affiliates are selling more. With that in mind, you might assume that it’s the pre-sell by the affiliates that’s really selling. Not the vendor’s sales page copy that’s converting. And, you have to assume that most of those affiliates are using the first method of sales page bypass.
Another thing is when you look at the percent per sale graph on CB Trends, because this value takes into account the refunds and how they affect what you make. So, if there are no changes in this graph or the percentage increases this tells you that the product is good with low refunds, the market is there because visitors are buying and it might be that the sales page copy is not doing the job that it’s suppose to do.
But, then again, a low conversion rate doesn’t mean that the sales page copy is what’s wrong. It could signal that the market for this product is non-viable. Or, the product is in demand but the market isn’t willing to pay for that particular product.
This is when you have the opportunity to create your own custom sales page that will convert better than the merchant’s sales copy. That’s the nice part of this method, when you create your own sales page you are in control. You can test your copy and you can build your own list selling the ClickBank product you are promoting.
You Found the Product to Promote – What Next? The Sales Funnel
The next step is to set up your sales funnel… You are in control of this so you will want to write a better converting sales page than the vendor’s poorly converting page. You can test this sales page till it gets maximum sales conversions.
A relatively inexpensive conversion testing software that you can use to do your sales page testing is Conversion Chicken. I highly recommend it as it is one of the most user friendly split-testers that I have run across and when compared to other split-testing software out there, you can’t beat the price.
The thing is, you can’t use your hoplink in this sales letter to capture the order as it will send your visitor to the vendor’s sales page and that’s what you’re trying to by pass as it isn’t converting sales well. In order to do this, you need to make an order link that goes straight to the merchant’s order page and includes your ClickBank nickname so that you get credit for the sales and you get your commission.
To do this, you need to make a link like this:
http://[ITEM].[Your ClickBank Nickname]_[Affiliate Product Publisher].pay.clickbank.net
-
You need to replace [ITEM] with the item number – (1,2,3 or whatever)
-
Replace Your [ClickBank Nickname] with your ClickBank Nickname
-
And then replace [Affiliate Product Publisher] with the vendor’s ClickBank Name
An Example would be: http://1.ristvin_cbpirate.pay.clickbank.net (this is an actual link that will take you to the CB Pirate order page) Once you have made your link, be sure to cloak your link so you don’t have your commission stolen from you.
There is a software program that will do all of that for you called Affiliate Cloner. In fact, this powerful software does much more… It can also make custom order links for any affiliate product in any affiliate program that you belong to. Affiliate Cloner also allows buyers to order directly from emails that you send to your list through your autoresponder.
Now you know that you can writer your own sales page, test it till you get the highest conversion rate, and send the visitor directly to the ClickBank order form by making your own custom order link or by having Affiliate Cloner do this for you.
Build Your List
This is great because now you can test and tweak your custom sales page to have more control over your sales funnel and you can do the one thing that is important to your marketing endeavors and that’s build your list. There’s a few ways to build your list when you are remaking a vendor’s sales page.
First, you can offer a special bonus in your sales copy that the visitor can get if they order the product through your link. You can then use a software like CBListAutomator to capture the name and email of the buyer and deliver the special bonus automatically upon the purchase of the product. CBListAutomator is a niffty piece of software to do this and is very user friendly when it comes to installing and setting up… One downfall is that it only works with ClickBank sales.
The second way I’ve found to build a list from ClickBank is by using another piece of software called CB Accountant. It would be nice if you could have control over the "thank you" page that ClickBank generates for the customer that bought through your link, but unfortunately, this is the only part of the sales funnel that you have no control over.
If you did have control, you could customize it to capture the buyers name and email. Being that you can’t do this, CB Accountant comes to the rescue. CB Accountant will extract the customer contact data for you and export this information to your list automatically.
And, finally the third way to build your list is to send your potential customer from your pre-sell page to an optin page prior to them being sent to your custom sales page. Here you have to ask them to give up their name and email address in return for some bonus or free report.
So that’s how you can get around a merchant’s crummy sales page that literally stinks when it comes to converting sales. I hope this was helpful…

Thanks. It took me a while to figure out how to do this. If I found your blog earlier it would have made my life easier. As a matter of interest do Clickbank have a problem with you doing this?

I don’t think that ClickBank knows that the sales is coming from a different sales page… I’ve been doing this for years and I’ve never had problems…
